Consumer Unit Upgrade in Killay

Old rewireable board replaced with a fully protected modern consumer unit

Location Killay, Swansea
Completed March 2026
Service Fuse Board Upgrade
Scope Old rewireable board removed, modern consumer unit with RCD and MCB protection fitted, every circuit tested, labelled, and certified

The Brief

A homeowner in Killay contacted us about an ageing fuse board that had reached the end of its working life. The existing board used rewireable fuses with no RCD protection, which is well below the level of safety expected by the current BS 7671 wiring regulations. The owner wanted a modern consumer unit that would protect the household properly against shocks, overloads, and electrical fire, and that would stand up to scrutiny from a home insurer.

What We Did

Our work included:

  • Surveyed the existing installation: Checked the wiring, circuits, earthing, and bonding, and confirmed the condition of the current board so we could plan the upgrade and flag anything that needed attention first.
  • Isolated the supply safely: The incoming supply was made dead and proven dead before any work began, and the household was advised on the period without power.
  • Removed the old rewireable board: The original fuse box was disconnected and taken out, with each circuit identified and recorded before disconnection.
  • Fitted a modern consumer unit: A new board with full RCD and MCB protection was installed, with every circuit correctly rated and clearly labelled.
  • Corrected minor wiring as needed: Where terminations or tails needed bringing up to standard for the new board, this was put right as part of the job.
  • Tested, certified, and notified: Every circuit fed by the new board was inspected and tested to BS 7671, and the relevant certification was issued. The consumer unit replacement was notified to building control as required for this type of work.

The Result

The property now has a modern consumer unit with full RCD and MCB protection, replacing a board that no longer met current safety standards. Every circuit is correctly protected, clearly labelled, and certified to the latest BS 7671 regulations, and the work was carried out by a NICEIC registered, UKAS approved contractor. The homeowner has documentation that satisfies both the regulations and their insurer, and a board they can trust to protect the home for years to come.

Job Duration: Completed in a single day from initial isolation through to testing, certification, and handover.
